Slow & Low x Umbrella Taco = “La Tamalada”

Hey, Hey, Los Angeles!

Slow & Low has teamed up with Umbrella Taco to present complementary Tamales meals for the LA based hospitality industry.

What is “La Tamalada”?

Glad you asked! The Los Angeles Times describes “La Tamalada” as the “occasion that happens every year around Christmas when families gather to celebrate a fragrant tradition- the tamalada or tamale making party”. Smithsonian’s Folklore Magazine goes further by exploring several families and their individual traditions and recipes noting that “While they are not difficult to make, preparing the fillings and masa—a flour made of corn soaked in lime juice and water—and spreading, folding, tying, and steaming the tamales is quite labor intensive. A typical tamalada day starts at 10 a.m. and goes into the early evening.”

The take-away is that this delicious and labor intensive feast is a celebratory occasion and one meant for sharing.

It is in that tradition that Slow & Low teamed up with Umbrella Taco- whose motto is- “Do good. Spread Love. Eat Tacos.” Or, tamales, in this case- to help spread the love to the LA based hospitality industry for a complementary holiday meal. It is important for everyone at Slow & Low to help spread both love and cheer to the hospitality industry- one that has been hit so hard by the global pandemic of 2020- as well as support the newly opened Umbrella Taco restaurant.

Needless to say, opening the taqueria during a pandemic was not included in the business plan, but with the industry veterans Umbrella Hospitality Group led by Austin Melrose and Zach Patterson (Melrose Umbrella Co.) at the helm, and chef Juan Catalan in the kitchen, the future is bright for this restaurant, and hopefully the industry at large. For now, Chef Catalan is sure to infuse his family tamales traditions from Guerrero, Mexico into every bite!
